What are Dental Implants?

What are dental implants?

In the world of Dentistry, Dental Implants has become the next big thing. It has been for a while. There have been various changes in design and improvement for the better. Better material, better techniques, and more experience for the dentists.

Implant is a multi-step surgery. First step involves burying the implant, which is essentially your new “root”, and the implant is kept “drilled” in your alveolar bone for some time. What we would want to see in the healing process is the correct integration of the bone and the implant. It is important that there is a full-recovery time for the implant integration.

Second step is assessing the condition of the integration before installation of an abutment. After installation of the abutment, there needs to be some healing time as well. Sometimes the first and second steps may be done at the same time, depending on each individual conditions.

The final step is the placement of the prosthetic tooth or teeth.

Success Rate

Dental Implants are not 100% successful, but they are known to have a very high success rate. The success rate is well over 90% for most healthy patients. One of the most important factors of dental implant success is the bone integration of implant. With the correct professional procedure and healthy integration, your dental implant surgery will be successful.

How to deal with expensive Dental Implants

1 Jan

Many edentulous (teethless) patients are suffering from unstable dentures. Especially, lower dentures are unstable due to frequent tongue movement and the lack of remaining bone. The ultimate solution to unstable dentures is dental implants. With dental implants, we can make fixed crowns or bridges and have them feeling like authentic teeth. But many patients cannot afford fixed crowns or bridges because of the expensive cost. 8 or 10 implants can easily cost anywhere from $25,000 to $30,000 USD. For those with financial difficulties, I recommend implant overdenture with 4 implants. Implant overdentures are removable but stable, and it only costs $10,000.

Dental implants not only support dentures and fixed crowns, but also keep the remaining bone from resorption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bone_resorption) which is slowly progress over your lifetime. Interestingly, our body keeps the bone around the teeth strong when the teeth exist, but once all the teeth are gone bone resorption starts. This is because our body thinks that there is no reason to keep the bone around the teeth when the teeth do not exist. I come across many patients who cannot get dental implants due to this problem. Therefore, placing the dental implants early can prevent natural resorption of the bone needed for dental implants.

I personally recommend the lower complete denture overdenture with 4 dental implants as the most financially and functionally effective solution. I have done many cases and most of my patients never had problems and continue to have a healthy smile. Once the patient is ready, the patient can always convert to fixed crowns later on.

Importance of Dental Exams

Importance of Dental Exams

What are some reasons people do not go to the dentist for their regular exams?

Pain?  Usually exams are not painful.
Time? Maybe?
Cost? Most likely.

People tend to make excuses by blaming time and cost. The $100-200 that it costs for a dental exam and full mouth x-ray CAN go a long way. Dentists must let patients know the importance of dental exams. And patients must understand the importance of regular dental exams as well.

Here are some reasons:

  1. Gum disease is more easily prevented than stopped. Regular exams and cleaning prevent tartar buildup, which help prevent bacteria favorable environment leading to gum disease.
  2. Find your cavities before it causes pain. If you wait till you are in pain, most likely it will cost you a lot money, pain, and time.
  3. Education for your children. Taking your children to regular checkups to the dentists will prevent fear associated with dentists. Painful teeth need painful procedures, therefore taking your child to the dentist only when he/she is in pain will associate pain with the dentist.
  4. Prevention of not just dental cavities and disease, but detect non-dental disease. Patients must understand that regular dental exams include more than just looking at the teeth, but it includes palpating the floor and roof of the mouth to check for signs of other disease.

Who is a Prosthodontist?

3 Dec

There are nine different specialties in the field of dentistry. Many people are familiar with orthodontists, periodontists, but not prosthodontists.

So what is prosthodontics and what does a prosthodontist do?

Let’s start with the definition of Prosthodontics.
Wikipedia has the perfect definition:

“Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.”

What is a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the ADA (American Dental Association) are specialists in restoration and replacement of the teeth. Prosthodontists are required to complete an additional three years of specialized training in an ADA accredited graduate program after their four years of dental school.
The seven years of rigorous training and experience allows the prosthodontist to deal with patients experiencing even the most complicated restoration problems.

Here are some ways a Prosthodontist  can help.

  • placing veneers onto the teeth to conceal defects
  • post oral cancer reconstruction and continuing care
  • Complex care management involving multiple specialists
  • Children missing teeth from birth
  • TMD- jaw joint problems
  • Traumatic injuries that involves reconstruction of the teeth
