How to find a Denture Dentist

15 Aug

'Do you have any denture friendly sandwiches?'Patients look for a dentist who specializes in dentures for several reasons. It might be your first-time for dentures or your dentures could be broken or ill-fitting. Whatever the reason, finding a dentist who can patiently answer your questions and recommend the right treatment options is important.

Not all dentists are the same.

Often dentists prefer certain procedures over others, some may like to work in the field of surgery and others may like to relief infections through root canal treatments. If you are looking for dentures, it might be wise to look for a dentist who has the experience and specialty in creating dentures.

Look for experience and specialty

If you are looking for a dentist for your dentures, it might be wise to look for a dentist who has the experience, specialty, and perfectionist nature for creating your perfect set of dentures. The anatomy of the mouth can be quiet different from person to person. The size of the mouth, locations of attachments, and other factors such as age and sex contribute to the right fit for the denture. It may be compared to a tailor who works with people of different size, height, and style. So it is important that you look for a dentist who is experienced, meticulous, and knowledgeable to fabricate your customized dentures.

How do you know if my dentist is a specialist or experienced?

There are nine specialties recognized by the American Dental Association (ADA), Prosthodontics is one of these specialties that focuses on dental prosthetics.

The ADA has defined Prosthodontics as
“the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.”
A prosthodontist goes through three extra years of extensive training in several areas of restorative dentistry including dental implants, crowns, bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, esthetics, occlusion, and facial and dental birth developmental defects.

Don’t look for “Cheap” Dentures

People often search for “cheap dentures” versus “quality dentures”. It is common sense that a dentist who advertises their “cheap” price is assuming that all you care about is money. You get what you pay for.

This does not mean that dentures cannot be affordable. High-quality dentures will focus on the fit, function, and appearance. I recommend that you do not pass on quality for something as important as dentures. Think carefully about how having teeth can affect your health, appearance, and the way you feel.

Ask Questions

A dentist who is proud of his workmanship and skill will be glad to answer your questions about dentures. Ask the dentist how he feels about dentures and feel them out. If you get the feeling that the dentist truly loves doing dentures and engages in your curiosity, they will be the right dentist for you.

Dr. David Choi has enjoyed making dentures for over 30 years. He went into special training at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry for 3 extra years to experience a vast amount of complex procedures involving dentures, implant dentures, dental implants, complex restorations, among other things to become a prosthodontist.

What is a Prosthodontist?

3 Dec

Prosthodontists is one of the nine dental specialties recognized by the ADA (American Dental Association) are specialists in restoration and replacement of the teeth. Prosthodontists are required to complete an additional three years of specialized training in an ADA accredited graduate program after their four years of dental school. The total of seven years of rigorous training and experience allows the prosthodontist to deal with patients experiencing even the most complicated restoration problems.

A prosthodontist often works closely with other dental specialists, such as an oral surgeon, to diagnose and plan out a patient’s treatment plan. For example, a patient in need of implant dentures will begin by planning out an ideal treatment, rehabilitation, and maintenance plan with a prosthodontist. The prosthodontist may refer out complex dental implant placement to an oral surgeon. The treatment will end with the prosthodontist restoring that implant, rehabilitating the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.

Finding a dentist with the experience and skill to fabricate the quality dentures with the right fit and workmanship can be difficult. We recommend that you research carefully for a dentist who has vast experience of fabricating dentures to avoid the common problems many patients will face.
